Knossos

The Palace of Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete and probably the ceremonial and political center of the Minoan civilization and culture. It is also a tourist destination today, as it is near the main city of Heraklion and has been substantially, if imaginatively “restored”, making the site more comprehensible to the visitor than a field of unmarked ruins.

Spinalonga

Coming from the east the large Venetian fort on the islet of Spinalonga is easily seen.

This is a place not to be missed by historians and the curious alike – it was once a leper colony, and still has the original small houses in which 200 lepers lived their isolated lives. The island is situated opposite to the most famous luxury resort village of Elounda.

Heraklion

(or Herakleion, Iraklion) is the capital of Crete and an industrialized city of around 155,000 residents. Beyond the crazed progress of moped riders, noisy scooters and a battered, out-of-control look to the city, there is much to do and plenty of things worth seeing, such as renovated Archaeological Museum which holds the remains of the 3000-year old Minoan civilization, small souvenir shops, museums, churches etc.
